LEGO and the funsmith

As you know, over the last few years I've been doing some work with LEGO on the development of a new LEGO project called: LEGO Games. One of the annoying things about consulting on new game projects is that I can't share my excitement or, more importantly, my discoveries with you.

The site is now live enough (though still under development, and not, conceptually, available to people in the US), and a couple of my articles about the LEGO Games System are finally available for global sharing.

See:
  • and Designing for Fun (Part One), followed immediately by Designing for Fun (Part Two) - I find myself impartially proud of the part I had in this small part of the LEGO Games website. I get to remind grown-ups about the fun and depth of learning we find when we get to re-invent the game we are playing.

See the second video on - http://games.lego.com/en-gb/parents/movies/default.aspx - for a good tour of the "whole idea" of LEGO games, including Internet Web 2.0ish component.

I've been excited by this idea since I saw it, and have been tracking it over on BoardGameGeek for several months. The games are now out in Germany.

Sadly, they are getting poor reviews by those folks who are seriously into board games. Comments like "Legos - 10, Game - 2" are being made. You can see one thread at http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/428558 These folks were hoping for games with more meaningful decisions in gameplay as the game was presented (and I don't think can see the potential of the toys).

I see great potential to these kits as game creation tools (as compared to , and wonder what could come out with a contest for people to design new games using these parts.

Will these be coming to the US? I've written Lego, but gotten no reply.

Hi, Scott. Thanks for the informative response. Sorry to hear that the people at BGG don't see these games for what they are - great fun for kids, and a meaningful invitation for them to make the games their own.

The plan, as far as I know it, is for the games to come to the US some time next year.
