Playgrounds for the big kids

by Bernie DeKoven on July 24, 2012

Take a look at this photo. Tell me, honestly, what’s your very first impression of what you’re looking at? It’s some kind of playspace, right? One of those indoor playgrounds, no? With ball pits and stuff to jump around in, yes?

This video came from the Tempest Freerunning Academy - a facility for teaching parkour its more creative version free running. Observe:

What strikes me about this, aside from the sheer awesomeness of what these people are able to make their bodies do, is that, if you didn’t see it in use, if you just looked at a picture of it, you’d think it was a kids’ playground.

What I’m thinking is that it really is a playground, only for adults. For certain adults. Adults who, like kids, believe the whole world is their playground. And spend much of their adult time proving it. And this place is where they practice, just what kids do in their playgrounds. In every sense, a playground. An adult playground.

My immediate first impression was of a scene from a Dr. Seuss book. Watching the video it almost was like Dr. Seuss. On the edge of impossible, so almost a fantasy. That must have taken a lot of practice.

I love the foam cube pit. I have a bean bag chair made out of t-shirts (shell) and little foam cubes. It is actually very comfortable.

Love and laughter,
