fun is enough

by Bernie DeKoven on May 15, 2013

“I don’t need to talk about serious games, and gamification, and the physical value of games, and games as releasing endorphins. I think that fun is enough. I think that if we have fun, allow ourselves to have fun, to define what is fun is for us, we don’t need to have another purpose. Fun itself is a guide to live fully in life; to bring your whole self into the world.”

I agree Bernie,
However, there are many people out there that have learned that fun in itself is a waste of time. They need the evidence of research as an excuse to be able to allow themselves to simply have FUN. It’s the difference between fun as a goal in itself, and fun as a mean in reaching another goal. I believe both are possible and important, but only the second is sellable…
Playful greetings,
Annemarie

I appreciate your comment, Annemarie (as always) and applaud your wisdom. Fun is a hard sell. However:

I am retired, so, not only don’t I need an excuse to have fun, having fun has become even more central to my life. Also, I was speaking, in particular, about “elder fun.” Most of us elders have reached a point in our lives where we see how important fun really is to us, to what we still have to bring into the world. And finally, after decades of addressing people who see fun as a means to something else, I have concluded that as long as they hold that belief, what they end up with is something else – something not fun.

Yes, it’s Learning that life is about the ride, not the destination. And we all have the choice to make it a funride or a boring, depressing and/or tiring one.
Keep up the FUN!
